Monday Punday

Too cute not to share.  Laughter is great medicine; contentment breeds calm ~ or here’s to hoping! Naturally, a balanced Yoga practice will stimulate the endorphins; you can also do a lot with breathing exercises.

A great yoga therapy technique to simulate laughter is Kapalabhati

Kapalabhati Pranayama (pronounced (kah-pah-lah-BAH-tee). Kapala = skull and bhati = light (implying perception, knowledge).
The effect of this energizing pranayama is to clear the mind, release emotional tensions, improve digestion, and leave you feeling “brighter,” almost as if your brain was standing in a warm and happy sunbeam.
Build up slowly!
Step by Step Guide:
Sit comfortably, using any support or props.  Try seated tadasana on a chair, if you like.
Focus on your lower abdomen, placing your hands there, one atop the other. Breathe in and then try laughing.
Notice the activity under your hands, as the belly contracts in short bursts.
Inhale, and as you exhale next time, repeat the same “ha ha ha” action but using short exhales through the nose.

Your inhales can be long, passive and slow, the exhales will be shorter bursts.  You can keep your hands on the belly and use them to pump the abdomen until you are comfortable and feel more adept at the rhythm.

Encouragement

start where you are

This is encouraging. A few people I have spoken to lately say they lack motivation. They all have different reasons. I think sometimes the projects we are trying to get motivation for are very big compared to the energy level we have. We spend so much time ‘doing’ What to do about bringing balance?

– You can try to sit quietly for a few minutes and unwind; my Yoga Mind cd has practices from 5 -20 minutes..rebalance, reboot, refresh

– You can set up a 15 minute relaxation practice

– You can do a restorative yoga pose, like legs up the wall (viparita karani)

There are many options, if you get stuck start where you are, use what you have, do what you can….and I am available for private yoga classes which will address structural, emotional, physiological imbalances so that you develop awareness and ability to find a yoga practice that meets your needs wherever you are

Yoga and the art of surrender

Love this quote ~ the idea of ‘surrender’ seems to be a concept that implies defeat and passivity but in the context of yoga, we learn surrender in deep, dreamless sleep and deep relaxation…but,  how many of us actually experience a sound slumber on a daily basis!? The best way to have a calm sleep is to be calm before bed, so taking a few moments to unwind your mind is a good idea. I would recommend the track, from my Yoga Mind cd called: The Essential Natural Breath. Nothing disturbed about it. Check it out or ask me for a private yoga class; step into your inner radiance and glow and grow

Calming the Mind Through Your Yoga Practice

This reminds me of a quote by B.K.S. Iyengar in Light on Life;  “when you cannot hold the body still, you cannot hold the brain still,  If you do not know the silence of the body, you cannot understand the silence of the mind”

I am not one of those teachers who does headstands everywhere, but I do attempt to bring a calm mind to daily situations.  This may be due to my respect for a healthy neck!

Yoga helps cultivate a strong body and calmly positive mind-set, even and especially during tough times…As a yoga therapist I  work with your unique body in order to create conditions of comfort.

Most people walk around sleep deprived, with headaches, digestive problems and crankiness…That being said, not all stretching is created equal.  Yesterday I spoke about the hamstrings  and how you want to learn how to stretch safely in order to prevent injury. Unfortunately, I do get students who are already injured, and then the emphasis is on healing and rehabilitation which is another benefit to a yogatherapy practice.

Want to get started? I have a host of zen ideas for you -you can cultivate calm in my fantastic blend between a yoga session and a massage called Yapana® Stretch One on One.  Or ~ check out my meditation tips, some breathing and relaxing tips on my Yoga Mind Cd; I am also available in public yoga classes in Tenafly and available for private yoga classes.
