Waking up

Waking upDo you tend to say “life is too short?” or are you a “life is too long!” kind of person?  I like to nourish the positive so I am going to go ahead and say that sometimes it feels like there is so much to learn, read, experience, grow from, express….this being admitted, if I future-ize all my energy with every next thing from the afore-mentioned list, I may not enjoy what I am doing in the now.  There is a lot to be said for building happiness in the present moment.   So whatever your pleasure is this morning (coffee, green tea, juice, hot H2O w/lemon) – focus on it and enjoy! If you can enjoy this moment, you will carry that amazing attitude in with you when life feels hard and too long, guaranteed!

Listening to Yourself

Listening to YourselfThis is hilarious! It really made me reflect about listening to oneself, resistance, and following the beat of one’s own drum. In this season of partying and group gatherings, I would just say the same thing I tell students in a group yoga class “listen to yourself” … It is so easy to feel completely pressured and overwhelmed, and sometimes this pace drowns out the quieter inner voice that says, “I’ve had enough” or “I need rest”.  Whatever the circumstances, keep a smile inside as you look at the little guy here who did his own thing shamelessly!

First love yourself“First Love Yourself Others Will Come Next”…This is a valuable lesson; when you take an airplane the stewardess always instructs you in the event it should be required, to put your own oxygen mask on before you do so for someone else. Running on empty we have nothing to give and put ourselves at risk for burnout.  Even a few minutes of simple yoga stretching and breathing can fill your well with energy and is a beautiful way to begin to take care of yourself.  Take flight!

“Intuition is soul guidance, appearing naturally in man during those instants when his mind is calm… The goal of yoga science is to calm the mind, that without distortion it may hear the infallible counsel of the Inner Voice.”

YOGA as Therapy

“Yoga Therapy is the process of empowering individuals to progress toward improved health and well-being through the application of the teachings  and practice of  yoga” – International Association of Yoga Therapists (definition 2011)

“It’s well known that stress can contribute to back pain and that yoga reduces stress.  Yoga, however, approaches this in a way unfamiliar to Westerners.  We believe our minds cause our bodies to move, our brains sending signals down nerve pathways to our muscles.  And, of course, that’s true.  However, in yoga, the opposite also applies.  The state induced by yoga in our bodies calms our minds.” – Loren Fishman, MD, and Carol Ardman,   Yoga for Back Pain Continue reading
