PeaceFULL : A Restorative Yoga Workshop to Combat Holiday Stress and Help you Reconnect With Your Calm Centre

Holiday Season is upon us, yet with all the extra festivities, so many people are stressed-out, with huge ‘to-do’ lists and “get-it-done” momentum, leaving them feeling exhausted, pressured and with no ability to recover. As the workload increases, and our social calendars fill, our digestive system becomes overloaded and sluggish, and our nervous system can feel more frazzled than filled with joy.

Restorative yoga is the antidote and will benefit and balance out the more active practices that Yoga offers. This specially themed class is a practice of BEING poses, postures held with strategic placement of props for an extended period of time, where the practitioner can detoxify, replenish and recover from fatigue, overtraining, and anxiety. We will also include breathing practices and deep relaxation to help regulate, repair, and allow your body to naturally release tension, elongate chronically tight musculature, and help you access your inner core of joy and peace, light and love.

So what would happen if you focused on your breath? It would not change the situation, but it would alter your perception. I just experimented with this at the dentist. First focused on my breath, then the drilling (OWWW) then back to my breath. Drilling still there, I was calmer though. My heartbeat wasn’t pounding. So … taking this to another situation seems like a good stress management plan.

This is a great reminder. The breath is the link between mind and body. If you are thinking stressful thoughts the body will hold onto them and create knots in the muscles (etc). This is why learning to use your breathing in a conscious (mindful) way will help you in all kinds of ways by triggering the parasympathetic response (relaxation response) in the nervous system. Like anything it takes practice, and the good news is I am available here in Jersey City for private yoga lessons or to give a workshop at your studio 🙂

Meanwhile this is one of many breathing techniques for mindfulness – you simply repeat to yourself when you breathe in, breathing in relaxation and when you breathe out, you focus on breathing out tension. It just takes a few moments to breathe mindfully so give it a whirl

Restorative Yoga Therapy

Why Restorative Yoga therapy? Tired?  Restorative Yoga Therapy is a key component to a balanced yoga practice whether you are an active athlete or a weekend warrior.  The body is able to stretch passively while the mind enters a calm abode.

In a restorative yoga class, the nice thing is there is no chasing involved. By bringing the support of props to practice, the practitioner receives the benefits of the posture without the overextension.

As anyone who is tired and or stressed out knows, mood is affected so easily that it is often hard not to be reactive, frustrated, anxious, or cranky. When we yogis speak of gratitude, it is often hard to get to that positive attitude when you are not in the right yogamind

Last week I spoke about the ananda maya kosha and how practices of restorative yoga help undo layers of tension in the body and help train the mind to accept the parasympathetic response easier, so that the innermost peaceful core is accessible.
