Reiki Energy

Reiki Energy:

“just for today do not worry,

just for today, do not anger

Honor your parents, teachers and elders

Earn your living honestly

Show gratitude to every living thing”

What is reiki energy? Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that promotes healing. It is ‘done’ by “laying on hands” and is based on the idea that an unseen “life force energy“, (called Qi or prana) flows through us and is what causes us to be alive.

I have practiced this for many years, and sometimes introduce some self-healing into my yoga classes. It is usually deeply relaxing. This state of relaxation is what promotes healing. I have one track on my Yoga Mind cd, that uses some of the healing principles and healing energy so that you, the practitioner, can learn to enter this deep state of calm and thus access the benefits of the modality. When you are relaxed, and in a non-stressed state, you are more at one with the “universal healing energy”, which is expressed by the above principles. For practitioners and participants, this relaxed state is key and one that should be practiced regularly.

Healing With Yoga

“Healing is not just a physical process, but a process of consciousness” ~ Doug Keller

The body knows how to heal itself. I gashed my thumb the other day and am just amazed at how in just two days, the skin is growing back. We tend to think of using yoga for healing in terms of the injured or sick but that is not always the case. I think an important understanding is that we can have general good health but still merit from a yoga practice that strengthens and supports the immune system, the rest and digest mechanisms, and recognize that managing stress plays a huge part in keeping our minds and bodies fit, resilient and efficient.

Taking our body for granted is a big mistake. Too much activity and not enough rest can interrupt the proper functioning of our inner body/mind and overload it so that it may impede recovery time. If you start to consider balancing out your practice so that there are different components – strength, flexibility and stillness, you are helping to prevent illness, helping to facilitate the miraculous movements that our bodies do silently in 24 hours.

light within

What a lovely affirmation !

Yoga Sutra 1.36 tells of the inner light within us all : visoka va jyotismati ~ mental stability also stems from serenity linked to luminous lucidity ~ Bounchaud

So for today, just let the light from the center of your heart radiate. You can also download my Golden Light Healing Relaxation practice for a full body-mind experience

yoga and healing

This is a really cool quote about healing; I always equated Yoga with healing – that every posture and facet of the system is there as a tool for transformation. Very different approach from the fitness craze – doesn’t mean that yoga as therapy cannot be endurance and strength building. I challenge you if you think that way to book a private yoga class with me ! People think of yoga props as cheating whereas in fact, a well placed yoga prop can make it way more difficult for you NOT to rely on compensation patterns!

Yoga, Healing, and You

Do you believe yoga heals?

Take the test: Get calm: for options click here.  Then, before practice, set an intention. Probably most helpful to identify just one issue on your mind, or in your body. Write it down. check in with it after. Usually, if you have a balanced practice that is right for you there will be some transformation. It is this simple feeling of things changing and getting better, the positivity of it all, that cultivates our sense of healing, which is quite miraculous (yet simple at the same time)

Injury prevention with Common Sense Yoga

Injury prevention with Common Sense Yoga -This cartoon makes me want to write about using your yoga practice as a way of healing and preventing injury ~

move through resistance

Yoga is a practice that takes time to learn. You can’t speed it up, you can only practice and build skills that will help things unfold as the mind-body receive the re-education from tension and holding patterns to release, increased range of motion, comfortrelaxation. Sometimes a holding pattern becomes chronic and that is where you really need a gradual approach which is always different for each person.  If your practice is not balanced (we tend to over-do) then you are not getting all the benefits, many of which are derived from the restoratives and other components.  I just taught a group today where many of the men were runners, particularly tight in feet, calves, hamstrings, hips; so we took time to adress this ~ you can’t just “fold forward”. Click here for a great read on preventing/healing hamstring injury with yoga therapy

Yoga is a practice that takes time to learn. Sometimes a holding pattern becomes chronic and that is where you really need a gradual approach which is always different for each person. As you can see from the photo, there is often resistance from the mind/body, so you need to differentiate and navigate so that you do not induce pain or strain. If your practice is not balanced (we tend to over-do) then you are not getting all the benefits, many of which are derived from the restoratives and other components.

Yoga is pretty popular here but I have noticed its use as fitness and cardio based exercise. Physical practice of yoga is movement, so you need to know that a potential for injury is still present.  I support any teaching that has a positive impact on the students.  But once in a while, I get an a new student who asks about an injury.  These injuries are usually a result of one of the following:

  • Overuse (repetitive stress syndrome)
  • Overloading a particular area (an underused tissue)
  • Misalignment

Because of my background I do my best to offer yoga as the therapy to the yoga injury. I try to give precise directions and help you find the pose from the inside of your body rather than expecting one cue to cover the masses. If you are recovering from an injury or just wanting to avoid an injury, join me or I am available for a private yoga class here in Bergen County.
